- Always read the labels on your bottles for dilution ratios and suggested amounts.
- Do Not ingest any essential oil unless it is prescribed by a medical professional or the company label has directions and/or information on how to use it.
- Always keep a bottle of V-6 Vegetable Mixing Oil, Massage Oil Base or any pure vegetable oil handy when using essential oils. Vegetable oils dilute essential oils if they cause discomfort or skin irritation.
- Keep bottles of essential oils tightly closed and store them in a cool location away from light. If stored properly, essential oils will maintain their potency for many years.
- Keep essential oils out of reach of children. Treat them as you would any product for therapeutic use.
- Essential oils are never recommended for use without first diluting, especially when using them on children. Also it’s generally recommended to avoid using essential oils on children under the age 2.
- When applying a new oil neat (directly on skin), test 1 drop on a small patch of skin first (e.g., on the underside of the forearm). Skin sensitivity is highly individual. If the skin feels hot or turns red, apply any of the vegetable oils listed above to the area to dilute and follow dilution instructions for future uses. Do not wash the area with water as it will drive the oil in deeper.
- Use only 1 new oil at a time to determine how your body responds.
- Wait 30 minutes before applying another new oil.
- Essential oil residue on the fingers may damage contact lenses or cause eye discomfort. If accidental stinging does occur, put 1–2 drops of pure vegetable oil into the eye.
- Do not putting essential oils directly into the eyes or ears.
- Pure citrus oils may compound the effects of sun exposure and cause sunburn and or rash. Some of these oils are: Angelica, Ginger, Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lemon, Orange, Tangerine, Citrus fresh, and Lime. Limit prolonged exposure to direct sunlight for up to 12 hours (up to 24 hours for Angelica and Lime; up to 48 hours for Bergamot) after applying these undiluted essential oils to the skin.
- Cosmetics, personal-care products, or cleansers with synthetic ingredients penetrate the dermal layers of the skin. Avoid applying essential oils to areas you use these products, as it may take these chemicals deeper into skin, fatty tissue, or the bloodstream causing a reaction.
- Avoid using essential oils on skin that has been damaged or affected by chemical burns.
- Limit the diffusion of unfamiliar essential oils to 10 minutes/day, increasing the time after determining their effects. The length of time should depend on the size of the room and potency of the oils.
- See individual label directions or check with a health professional before using essential oils if you have a serious medical condition or are pregnant, nursing, or planning to become pregnant.
- DO NOT attempt to self-diagnose or prescribe any natural substances for conditions that require professional attention.
